Upon arrival at the mid-way point of our ride at a beautiful mountain lake near the Austrian border, we parked the bikes, shed our gear and sat in stunned silence gazing at the scenery. The rustic wood snack/café the size of a large sauna generated a selection of savory (burgers, schnitzel, etc.) and sweet goods (crepes, etc) for the hikers, bikers, swimmers and campers. Since food is a manner to taste culture, it’s best to “go local”. Taking the lead from our tour guide, the Sirvoli Štruklji was recommended with the option of leaning sweet or savory. The inevitable follow-up is a request to describe Sirvoli Štruklji, with words beyond it’s a typical Slovenian dish. The trilingual menu listed this delicacy as “boiled crud pies”, not exactly the most appealing description. It turned out to be a yummy combination of dough and cheese curd with various local savory/fruit toppings.

Today’s ride was an out and back, so despite the heat and late start due to technical difficulties, we realized that the return journey would be an easy descent down the mountain. Filled with Isotonic beverages, water and boiled crud we followed the Kokla river valley to Cerkje na Gorenjskem and crossed the now familiar picturesque valley to our flat in Kamnik. Today’s totals… 56 miles, 2700 ft elevation gain achieved in a leisurely 4h 30mn.

Love the closing shot of the sweating 3 mousekeeters and of course ordering food in a foreign language which always makes a lasting memory. If in doubt french fries/pomme frittes are usually good around the world
