Gone with the Wind

9/8 truncated 82 miles Napoleon ND to Enderlin ND

As we arose this morning in the sleepy hamlet of Napoleon, North Dakota we were greeted by a blanket of fog and at the same time, oddly, a fairly brisk wind. We knew there was wind in the forecast and that it’d be pretty much in our faces but didn’t expect it to really kick in before sunrise. So the morning’s exertions were unexpectedly arduous. There are nearly no towns along our route so we were touching my grateful to arrive in the town of Gackle.
Gackle was able to provide the barest of amenities but we scored a pre-packaged sandwich and a burrito and some other junk food that made us happy. We also took pictures of the town and the only man to found walking in the street. His name was Dwight Beglau and guess where he was from? Yep, Minnesota! We encountered Dwight in what can only be described as a less-than-thriving downtown area. However it did provide some unusual images. Gackle is the home of the Orioles, as you can see from the photo. I thought they missed an opportunity by not calling the high school team the Gackle Grackles, although I admit I didn’t see any Grackles. Didn’t see any Orioles, either
The rest of the day was spent riding into an east wind that would have caused lesser men to run mad. This through a truly featureless and (thank goodness) increasingly flat landscape. Whew! Are we glad to be in Enderlin!
