9/6 103 miles from Dickinson ND to Bismarck ND
The signal feature of today’s ride was the change from Badlands to verdant butte country to the sort of “Giants in the Earth” countryside that we Minnesotans are familiar with. I’m referring, of course, to Ole Rolvaag’s book in which he details the difficulties faced by pioneering farmers who had to contend with boulders emerging from the soil of their farms and frequently breaking their plow blades. This is the countryside we entered after our lunch in New Salem, North Dakota. We also changed time zones today during our rather arduous hilly ride of over 100 miles. We had to keep reminding ourselves of the lost hour when checking our progress so we wouldn’t burst into tears.
Our person of the day is Mr. Victor Sattler. We met him outside the Sit n Bull bar in Taylor, North Dakota. He was taking his little dog for a walk and told us he was a 30÷ year employee for Boeing in Seattle. He elected to take his retirement in tiny Taylor to get some peace and quiet. And quiet it is.

Signal in this case is used as an adjective meaning remarkable. Thanks for helping to keep us honest, though.

Fairly certain we saw you cranking out an uphill on 94 eastbound outside of Dickinson as we were on our way out to the Maah Daah Hey Trail for a few days of mountain biking and trail riding. Keep it up!

I wouldn’t have known if it weren’t for Jacie and Charlie meeting you in Montana just a few days prior. Jacie and I work across the hallway from each other, so I’ve been able to hear all about the adventure!
