The Federal Gov. still works damn it

Tonasket Wa to Republic Wa 8/23 40 miles 25 mile 3500 ft climb 90*

Close to the top of the climb we stopped at a closed cafe/general store in Wacaunda. Sarah met us there and got to talk to an older guy about why it was closed. “The lady that owned it did both drugs and alcohol and the local ladies put the word out not to go there. That was it.”

Right then a women drove up in a red BMW convertible in a funky pink hat. Dorthy, the post master, raised the flag and opened up for about 3 hours. I think the funkiest colored post office I’ve ever seen was open 2 days a week at about 3 hours per day. Finally the Donald’s cost cutting is having an impact. Thank you President Trump.

We met some great ladies at the excellent organic coop where we had lunch. The dark chocolate covered macaroons were almost worth the 300 miles of riding. Madeline (blue shirt) figured we were not from around there and helped us pick out a few lunch items.  She also gave us a personal tour of the Republic history center which was excellent. The 2 mule deer fawns were laying in the shade hanging out. Madeline had to leave us as she had to clean out a very dead pack rat from the historic cabin on site.

Shiela (dark hair) was a hoot. She picked out Peter right away as a trouble maker and really never let up on him.  She told us an interesting story about watching 2 bulls fight for the right to have sex with the cows. She said the cows were milling around with a look on their face saying “we win either way”. I asked Sheila how she ended up in Republic (from Michigan) and she said she ran out of gas and walked into a bar.

Sheila is our LPOTD (Shelia if you’re reading this that’s Local person of the day).

PS anyone reading this from LOL, nice market coverage. Probably 3 cows near Republic. Brian wants to keep this dealer open.
